Adult Acne

April 7, 2016 By Patti Durkin

Adults who never had acne as a teen can develop acne in their 30s, 40s and even 50s. Adult acne behaves differently than teen acne and can be uncomfortable both physically and emotionally. Three causes of acne are bacterial, hormonal fluctuations and inflammation in the body. Women are more prone to adult acne than men. Men still need facials!  In this blog, I am going to address the latter two because I feel they can be more challenging (not hopeless) to treat. Bacterial acne can be kept under control by cleansing twice daily and using the correct scrub, masque and moisturizer.  Acne caused by hormonal fluctuations and inflammation comes from within the body.  What type of hormonal activity or lack thereof is happening?  What is the cause of inflammation in the body?

Hormonal Acne

Fluctuating hormone levels can lead to breakouts and women can experience fluctuations around their periods, during pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause. Beginning use of birth control pills or discontinuing use can cause breakouts. You can also add stress to this category. Researchers have found a correlation with stress and acne. When the body is under stress, more of the hormone, androgen, is produced. Androgens are produced in the adrenal glands and ovaries. High levels of androgens in a female can lead to acne and oily skin.

Inflammation Acne

The most likely cause of inflammation acne is an unbalanced gut. The gut bacteria are one of your strongest allies in being healthy. Per the website paleohacks, “new studies are coming out every day exploring the connection between gut bacteria and practically every other aspect of human health. The conclusion is clear: if you can change your gut, you can change your life. What are the signs of digestive issues? Gas, bloating, heartburn/acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation, IBS and Irritable Bowel Disease. Other ramifications of an unbalanced gut are mental issues, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, chronic and unmanaged stress and SKIN CONDITIONS. Skin conditions include acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.” These are the 4 issues I see the most at Seven Doors. To find out ways to balance your gut, visit http://blog.paleohacks.com.

Next Steps

First, do not stress over a breakout. Sometimes there isn’t one reason for it.  Next, get the professional facial to determine the type of acne you may have. A skilled, seasoned skin care professional will know how to balance your skin and put you on the path to minimizing breakouts. Immediately after the facial, you should see healthier skin and it should feel incredible. A quality facial lasts 4-6 weeks.  Eminence Organic Skin Care is the line I have used for almost 12 years. It delivers results, is plant-based and triple certified organic by european standards. These products go beyond claims of buzzwords “non-comedogenic”, “dermatologist tested”, etc. The best way to experience these products is in a facial treatment because 10-12 products will be used. After the facial, an at-home regimen is recommended. (No hard sell/no stress!) The home regimen will fit seamlessly into your personal care routine.

With regular, professional facials and at-home care, you can minimize breakouts and how long they are active.  A healthy diet, exercising regularly (sweating to remove toxins), and controlling stress all play a huge role in controlling acne. It has taken me one year to discover my triggers and just knowing those has decreased my flare-ups and I’m 54 years old!

Lastly, I recommend a one hour facial at Seven Doors, particularly for first time clients. This allows more time for analysis and treatments. Plus, you will need at least 15 minutes to quiet your mind! Visit https://www.sevendoorssalon.com for more information on facials. I look forward to seeing you soon so you can discover how your skin should look and feel!

Found on website about.com: “How often you should get a facial depends on several factors — your skin type, skin condition, skin care goals, your budget, age, even where you live. On average, getting a professional facial once a month is ideal for someone who wants to take good care of their skin. That’s because the skin is a living organ, and it takes about 30 days for the cells to move up from the dermis to the surface, or epidermis, where they flatten out, die and slough off. A professional facial stimulates that exfoliation process, keeping the skin more toned and youthful-looking. ”
